…I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you… For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 11 Timothy 1:6-7
Purpose of the United Methodist Women
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
UMW is an organization of nearly 1 million women who seek to know God and to make life better for women, children, youth and marginalized neighbors in today’s modern, shrinking world. Through the Women’s Division and the General Board of Global Ministries, the UMW supports missions in thousands of communities in every state and in more than 50 countries around the world.
Stockton United Methodist Church is blessed with an active UMW unit comprised of three circles plus several members at large.
Our UMW unit enables women to grow together in fellowship, prayer and service by hosting activities such as a New Year’s tea, a Campership luncheon fund raiser for children to attend church camp, semi-annual rummage sales to fund missions, retreats for spiritual growth, nursing home birthday parties, and a reception for the congregation's graduating seniors. The women also actively support many other church projects. Click to see the [2009 UMW calendar of events].
Our [three UMW circles] meet monthly, usually in members’ homes on a rotating hostess schedule. The women enjoy the time of fellowship together, plus devotions, prayer, a program highlighting a mission area and refreshments. Each circle participates in the [UMW reading program].
Our unit and our three circles actively reach out in our community and beyond, offering Christ’s care and encouragement, with radical hospitality and extravagant generosity.
